VUNJA MDUARA
TSDA is implementing a programme known as Vunja Mduara (Break the Cycle). Vunja Mduara is a comprehensive health program aimed at alleviating the burden of SCD in Tanzania. The program focuses on prevention, early diagnosis, comprehensive care, and community engagement and empowerment. By implementing evidence-based interventions, Vunja Mduara seeks to reduce the birth prevalence of SCD, improve the quality of life for individuals with SCD by reducing morbidity and mortality rates, and contribute to a healthier Tanzanians. The Ministry of Health has adopted and endorsed Vunja Mduara as a national pragmatic strategy for intervention of SCD disease.
Sickle cell Disease is a genetic blood disorder that affects millions worldwide, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Tanzania is among the countries with the highest SCD prevalence, ranking number 4 globally next to Nigeria, India, and DR Congo. Every year up to 14,000 children are born with SCD in Tanzania.
